What is a throughline?

In theatre, a throughline is the work an actor undertakes to connect all the actions visible to an audience with the unseen – but no less integral – inner life of the character s/he portrays.

In “literary” theatre, a playwright dictates the dialogue (that’s the script) and the director shapes the action. Only the actor can evolve the character’s personality, intellect and spirit.

The humanity the actor creates is often what arrests the audience’s attention. This idea was the cornerstone of Constantin Stanislavsky’s theory and teaching of acting. He was Chekhov’s director. He pioneered a system to liberate actors from the unreliability of their own talent.

Throughlines matter in business because business success means influencing what other people choose. This brings business into the domain of making believe.

Making believe connects with “make believe” – the stuff of fiction and supremely theatre.

We connect important principle from theatre craft with the work of helping businesses cope with change and connect with people…people inside their organisations, people out in the world.
